The interference of political polarization in perception, opinion and awareness of climate change: analysis of uncertainties in the Human Development Index Report - 2020-2021

Abstract

The number of environmental crises and disasters has increased in recent years. The risks of climate change are at the center of political and public discussions and actions, which require awareness on the part of society. However, the post-pandemic moment of COVID 19 has accentuated uncertainties in all dimensions of everyday life. This research investigated whether the uncertainties noted in the 2020-2021 Human Development Index (HDI) Report signaled procrastination of policy actions aimed at mitigating climate change risks. This is a qualitative, documentary, bibliographic, and applied research. Its objective was to confront the literature review with the results that appear in the Human Development Report, 2020-2021, analyzing the prevailing uncertainties. The result shows the threat of political polarization as an impediment to reflective and cooperative actions of society in the face of this emerging issue: climate change.
