Abstract

Introduction. The HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is caused by the human T retrovirus and one of its major manifestations is the progressive spastic paraparesis. Objective. This study aims a literature review about the use of functional scales to evaluate subjects of HAM/TSP to give a guideline to the physical therapists who work in the rehabilitation of these patients. Method. In this literature review a search was made in the database of Bireme, Scielo and PubMed to identify evaluation profiles, measurements and indicators used with patients of neurological conditions. Discussion. Different evaluations instruments have been proposed to follow up subjects with neurological dysfunction along the course of their life, although recommendations for the use of certain instruments are not frequently discussed in the literature, especially with patients of HAM/TSP. Conclusion. The literature does not present uniformity in methods and proceeds of research. The FIM scale seems to be the most adequate instrument to evaluate the patients with HAM/TSP, since it is able measure the functional changes in the patients along the course of the disease.
