Abstract

In this article, I analyze the friendship between the two protagonists of the series of novels by writer Elena Ferrante, better known as the “Neapolitan tetralogy”, in light of the theory of the formative novel. If in classic novels, friendship is an essential element in shaping the protagonist's personality, in Ferrante's Neapolitan tetralogy the friendship between Elena Greco (Lenu) and Raffaela Cerullo (Lila) becomes the central, most important and decisive in the formation of the two protagonists. Consequently, with the representation of two protagonists at the center of the plot connected by this friendship relationship, Ferrante also modifies the characteristic of individualism typical of the formative novel. In dialogue with historians such as Reinhart Koselleck, Franco Moretti, as well as sociologist Georg Simmel and literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, in addition to the critical fortune of Ferrante's work, I analyze in this article the configuration of Lenu and Lila's friendship in the Neapolitan tetralogy and its subversions of the topoi of the formative romance subgenre.
