DOS Artists of the nation? A reading of the biography of artist in two periodicals colombian

Abstract

This paper seeks to study the configuration of the "nation" in the construction of artist biographies in two periodicals of great relevance for the development of the Colombian artistic field: El Papel Periódico Ilustra do (1881-1888) and Lectura y Arte (1903-1906). El Papel Periódico Ilustrado published, within the framework of its purpose of artistic and legal training, a series of biographies of characters that would consolidate a kind of pantheon of illustrious men. Within this catalogue, four figures from the artistic field stand out: José M. Espinosa, José M. Groot, Francisco J. Matís and Ramón Torres Méndez. In connection with this initiative, years later, Lectura y Arte published biographical stories by Epifanio Garay, Andrés de Santamaría, Ignacio Cano and Marco Tobón Mejía. In both publications, the texts are accompanied by portraits drawn in what seems to be a generic mark of this type of writing. In the first place, I propose to characterize the biographies paying attention to aspects such as training, recognition and portraits, from the perspective of authorial and biographical studies. Then, I hope to delve into the ideas of nation from the places of enunciation in which the characters are configured following the discussions raised by Aníbal Quijano, María Lugones and Ángel Rama. Finally, based on the approaches of Jesús Barbero, I will analyze the place of these periodical publications in the construction of the ideas of nation.
