Introduction. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disabling disease, with progressive course, which leads to muscle weakness and declines life expectancy, sometimes because of the impairment of respiratory
muscles, frequently associated with psychological disorders, depression, and sleep disorders. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between sleepiness, depression, and anxiety in patients with ALS. Method. 53 patients, diagnosed with ALS, 39 men, mean 54.79 years old, were submitted to evaluation with sleep scales: SSS (Stanford Sleepiness Scale), ESS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), MSQ (Mini-Sleep Questionnaire); and psychological evaluation: BDI and STAI I-II. The test used to analyze the results was the Mann-Whitney, t-Student, and Pearson test. For all tests we considered p < 0.05 as an indicator of statistical significance. Results. There was a positive significant correlation of the sleepiness scales among themselves, with BDI (depression), and with specific items of STAI I, and STAI II (anxiety). Conclusion. The SSS was the scale that revealed better correlation with the other scales of sleepiness (ESS and MSQ). The scale of assessment of depression (BDI) indicated a significant correlation with all levels of sleepiness.
