Abstract

The hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP) or Strumpell-Lorrain disease is a progressive disorder formed by a group of neurodegenerative conditions whose main clinical characteristic is the muscular weakness associated the varied degrees of spasticity in the lower limbs, being caused for a disturbance in the development or gradual degeneration of the pyramidal tract. The spasticity has been described as a motor disorder, characterized for the increase of the speed-dependent in the reflexes tonic of stretching and hyperactivity of the deep reflexes. Patients with HSP declare that innumerable functional abilities become injured by the association of the muscular weakness and spasticity. The hydrotherapy and its properties constitute an alternative for the physical rehabilitation of neurological patients. We report the case of a patient with HSP and suggest some proposals of rehabilitation in aquatic environment.
