Abstract

Introduction. Acquired autoimmune myasthenia gravis (AAMG) is a neuromuscular junction disorder (NMJ), which is characterized by fluctuating weakness and fatigue of skeletal muscles. The respiratory muscle training (RMT) is an alternative attempt to reduce or delay deterioration of respiratory function, which is found in the majority of myasthenia gravis patients and is associated with mortality and morbidity index. Objective. Assess the effectiveness of respiratory muscle training in AAMG. Method. Indexed trials from 1966 to 2006 on databases: Medline, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane Library, and manual search in books and thesis using key-words to establish a relation between AAMG and RTM. Results. There was lack of descriptions about RMT in AAMG, although exists in the literature a wide variety of protocols used in neuromuscular and lung disease patients. There was found improvement of the respiratory muscle strength, endurance dyspnea index and quality of life. However, there was no consensus on which protocol, technique and efficacy of the RMT in each stage of the disease. Conclusion. The RMT seems to be an efficient treatment in AAMG. Nevertheless, the lack of methodological rigor criteria demands a careful analyze of the outcomes, denouncing an urgent need of discerning new trials about this topic.
