The article analyzes some aspects of the reception given to the book Motins Políticos ou história dos principais acontecimentos políticos na Província do Pará desde o ano de 1821 até 1835, written by the paraense historian and politician Domingos Antonio Raiol. Its narrative, focused on a description of the political and social conflicts in Pará between the 1820s and 1830s, was also directly responsible by inscribing Antonio Raiol into the select group of intellectuals who belonged to the nineteenth century Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. Based on this assumption the article examines Raiol’s difficult trajectory, which may be characterized as a process that went beyond his own intellectual ability.
