Abstract

Introduction. For adequate health management, the individual needs to understand their clinical condition and know how to make critical and assertive decisions about their health, highlighting adequate health literacy (HL) as an important ally in this process. Objective. Analyze the LS and knowledge about the clinical conditions of people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) hospitalized for a rehabilitation process. Method. Quantitative longitudinal analytical study, which included individuals with SCI, ≥18 years old, of traumatic etiology, with injury time ≤18 months. The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire short-short form (HLS-EU-Q6) and a questionnaire developed by the authors regarding knowledge about SCI were used. Results. 35 individuals, with a mean age of 41.97±17.48 years; 28 (80%) males, 17 (48.57%) individuals had a level of thoracic injury, the majority developed complete injuries, ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) A 16 (45.70%) individuals, and the main etiology came from accidents automobiles 16 (45.71%) individuals. 29 (82.85%) individuals were admitted with a problematic LS level and this level did not change at the end of hospitalization in 28 (80%) individuals. There was a significant improvement in participants' knowledge at the end of hospitalization (p=<0.01). There was no correlation of LS with the Knowledge About Spinal Cord Injury questionnaire (p=0.09). Conclusion. The health literacy of individuals with spinal cord injury did not change during the hospitalization period, remaining problematic. There was an improvement in knowledge about the clinical condition of this population, even those who remained in isolation during the hospitalization period.
