Introduction. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neuropsychiatric syndrome. It is characterized by behavioral changes associated with a deficit in communication and social interaction, as well as repetitive behavior patterns. A recurrent characteristic in these individuals is food selectivity, defined by food refusal, less acceptance of new foods and reduced food variety. Consequently, there is a greater probability of overweight and obesity, as well as masticatory and swallowing alterations. Objective. To characterize the food selectivity of children diagnosed with ASD, according to findings in the literature. Method. This is a literature review, carried out in 2021. The databases used were PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, covering the period from 2011 to 2021. The selection of articles was carried out in two stages. The first one considered the analysis of the citations retrieved from the database, independently, considering titles and abstracts. The second stage analyzed the full texts of the citations selected in the first stage, considering those that were effectively related to the study as apt to compose the body of the study. Results. 307 studies were found, of which 70 were duplicates. 237 articles were evaluated by title and abstract, with 11 studies being included at the end. Studies with children diagnosed with ASD of both sexes who presented the profile of food selectivity were included. Conclusions. In view of the heterogeneity of the selected studies, we identified difficulties in relation to the characterization of the food selectivity of children diagnosed with ASD.
