Objective. To evaluate the benefits of a respiratory physiotherapy program (RPP) in respiratory muscle strength in individuals with Down syndrome. Method. It was an interventional study with seven volunteers of both genders with a mean age of 24.57 years. The RPP consisted of resisted diaphragmatic and abdominal exercise for a month, three times a week. For measurement of inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength before and after the RPP, the manometer was used to record the Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP). For data analysis, we used the BioEstat 5.3. Data normality was verified by the Shapiro-Wilk test was employed the Student t test for two related samples. The level of significance was p<0.05. Results. Comparing the values of maximal respiratory pressures before and after RPP, we can observe a significant difference in the measurements of MIP (p=0.0487). The MEP measures were not statistically significant different (p=0.3559). Conclusion. The RPP promoted improvement in muscle strength in individuals with Down syndrome.
