Abstract

Introduction. Depression is defined as a multifactorial psychiatric disease that affects more than 300 million people and has symptoms such as depressed mood. It can be triggered by stressful events and significantly impact some physiological stages of memory, such as recall, processing speed and storage associated with aberrant hippocampal functionalities. Objective. To highlight the losses of depression related to emotional and cognitive aspects that compromise memory, approached based on neurophysiological abnormalities. Method. This is an integrative literature review prepared through research using the Scielo, PubMed, LILACS, VHL and ScienceDirect databases, with the following descriptors “Physiology” and “Depression” and “ Memory” in the period 2018-2023 and 26 articles were selected according to the title, abstract, year of publication, type of study, language and agreement with the theme. Results. The literature review was carried out regarding the association between the pathophysiology of depression and memory loss, the epidemiology, the pathophysiological character of depression and the various physiological facets of memory were described. Conclusion. Therefore, this article addresses an extremely important topic since pathological manifestations in memory such as the neurocognitive impact due to depression are relevant symptoms that impact an individual's life.
