The impact of sleep quality on memory in schoolchildren

Introduction. Poor sleep quality in children, caused by sleep disorders and/or poor sleep habits, can affect the quality of life and the cognitive development. Objective. To relate the main memory complaints with the subjective aspects of sleep in children and the impact of sleep quality in memory. Method. 71 guardians of schoolchildren participated, enrolled in a public school, aged 6 to 11 years (8.52±1.54), who answered an anamnesis, Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ-PT) and Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PMRQ). Results. 68% of the children had high sleep disturbance index and 8% with prospective short-term memory complaints. There was an association between school difficulty complaints and the CSHQ-PT in sleep disturbance index (p=0.050) and in resistance to going to bed (p=0.035). There was association between the perception of school performance with night awakenings of the CSHQ-PT (p=0.037). Positive correlations were found between the variables of long-term memory, short-term memory, prospective memory, and retrospective memory in relation to the sleep disturbance index, resistance in going to bed, nocturnal awakenings, parasomnias, sleep disordered breathing and daytime sleepiness. Conclusion. There was a relationship of the impact of sleep quality on children's memory complaints.
