Abstract

Objective. To analyze the influence of physical exercise on the mental health of elderly people with dementia and its possible benefits. Method. The present this literature review used as a guiding question revison guiding question: “does the practice of physical activities bring benefits to the mental health of elderly people with dementia?”. For the development of the research, the 6 stages proposed by Cunha and Macedo 2011 were used. The option of selecting articles by PUBMED and the Virtual Health Library (VHL) was made. Results. Based on the descriptors used, 407 articles were founded in PubMED and 202 in the VHL. From the filters and evaluations of the authors, 9 were selected to compose the theoretical framework of the research and, from these articles, the title of the study, the journal in which it was published, the authors and the year of publication were highlighted. Finally, when reading the articles, it was possible to relate to three themes: whether the elderly were institutionalized or not, whether the practice of physical activities brought benefits to these elderly people and what were the benefits identified by the researchers when intervening in the individuals' routine. Conclusion. It was possible to conclude that physical activity positively influences the mental health of elderly people with dementia by bringing improvements in socialization, alleviates cognitive and functional disorders and reducing depressive conditions; that is, it aims to improve the quality of life of this population.
