Abstract

With the invaluable contribution of renowned experts from Brazil and abroad, the volume is composed of the dossier "Art and Archaeology in Pompeii," produced by the efforts of two eminent Brazilian scholars on the subject: Professors José Geraldo Costa Grillo, from the Department of Art History at UNIFESP, and Pedro Paulo Funari, from the Department of History at UNICAMP. The dossier, presenting itself as a publication of extreme originality in the context of art history and archaeology studies in Brazil, consists of a set of articles addressing various aspects related to the topic, promoting an update of research on art and archaeology in Pompeii. Disciplinary and methodological aspects related to the topic are analyzed and discussed, aiming to understand how the discovery of the cities buried by Vesuvius in the 18th century impacted the understanding of Antiquity. It considers issues related to the importance of the Pompeii excavations for Brazilian studies in the field of Classical Archaeology and the reception of archaeological discoveries in Pompeii in the arts in later periods, as well as reflections on the theme of sexuality and its epistemological implications, and even the issue of publicity in the context of Pompeii research.
