DOS Hanna Levy and the Old Saints

Abstract

This article investigates how two little-studied texts by Hanna Levy, “Bruno Giorgi” (1941) and, above all, “Velhos santos” (1946), address recurring themes and methods in other articles on Brazilian art published by her in Brazil during the 1940s, therefore integrating a larger framework of the author's reflections on the topic. Hanna Levy questions, in this set of texts, definitions of modern Brazilian art and, as will be seen more briefly here, colonial art, contrasting European and Brazilian baroque, or colonial painting and sculpture produced in the country, and proposing a complex and multifactorial vision of national art, which considers formal, sociological and technical aspects.
