Abstract

This article addresses the activities of Theo van Gogh, brother of the painter Vincent van Gogh, as an art dealer in the final decades of the 19th century. Theo is mainly known to be the correspondent for most of the letters written by his brother. However, in the period studied, the name van Gogh was associated with the art dealer and not the artist, given the importance of Theo in the art trade. But this does not mean that he was a disinterested warrior of modern art, as John Rewald pointed out in a text on the dealer. On the contrary, Theo was integrated into the business practices of his time. Thus, dealing with impressionists was also a means of advancing his career and obtaining profits.
