Abstract

Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the profession of musician was assumed with exclusivity and its representation in painting shows that the rise in social and class status was accompanied by habits of dress that brought a strong attribution of identity to the adoption of color. Through the analysis of specific situations, a brief overview of the use of black in the clothes of musicians represented in painting and how the color homologated the professionals was traced here. Passing through the musicians of Prince Ferdinand of Tuscany, at the end of the 17th century, to the both iconic instrument players Niccolo Paganini and Franz Liszt, the use of black seems to have established itself as a coating of attributes necessary to consolidate the profession.
