Abstract

This paper intends to briefly present theological aspects regarding the Last Judgment, the role of Christian images in Late Medieval art and, connecting both topics, iconographic changes and developments in Italian visual representations of the Last Judgment, particularly in panel paintings, by the end of the Middle Ages. We aim to relate these changes mostly to their expected religious functions in the stimulus of private devotion.
