Abstract

The goal of this research note is to point out the problem of the relationship between general and particular in the historiography of art from the contrast between paradigms developed in the writings of Erwin Panofsky and some of their repercussions in both Art History and other disciplines in the Humanities. We seek to suggest that the privileged relationship
with the “Renaissance” as a historical epoch forged by Jacob Burckhardt triggered a series of analytical principles linked to
the notion of “intuition”, which are explored here from the res- ponses to the challenge posed by the concept of “artistic voli- tion” in the 20th century.
