During the last two years Latin American countries and Spain celebrated
the bicentennial of the beginning of independence movements and the
first modern constitutions, including the constitution of Cadiz (1812).
This article evaluates the progress of our historiographical knowledge on
this period during the last two decades. On the other hand, explores new
possible paths to be followed in the forthcoming years in order to improve
our knowledge of the experience of modernity in the Spanish Atlantic.
