Abstract

Environmental Education (EE) in Portugal is mainly approached informally. This project intended to formally include a concept related to EE in the curriculum of a vocational course. The concept chosen was Aquaponics (closed-circuit breeding of fish and plants) due to its characteristics and technical value. The project lasted three years, during which training was given to the teachers involved. Questionnaire surveys were carried out with students and interviews with teachers, whose content analysis allowed solving some initial problems. In this way, the need to respond to the global environmental crisis was met by acting locally in the curriculum, as a mediator between school and society.
