Contribution of geography in the planning and management of urban space: the case of the City of Nampula

Abstract

The theme of this article is the contribution of geography in the planning and management of urban space. The research arises within the scope of personal concern as a professor at the Púnguè University - Chimoio in the face of the problem found that the permeability of geography will adapt to new circumstances and flexibility to adapt to new contexts, as well as its ability to respond and active intervention in society and with other professionals, which results from their acceptance and appreciation in time and space. In methodological terms, this research adopted a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach considers that everything can be quantifiable. For the interpretation of the data, the objective was understand the contribution of geography in the planning and management of urban space. For this purpose, a bibliographical review was presented, with the discussion on How Geographic Science can Contribute to the Planning and Management of Urban Space in the City of Nampula through its various fields and application instruments? Subsequently, the empirical study carried out with 42 respondents is presented, aimed at the Professors of the Geography Course at the UPN, the Geography Professors at ESG, the Students at the Geography Course and at Unilúrio. As an instrument, the questionnaire and direct observation were used. In terms of conclusions, the results clearly showed that the need to know the spatial distribution of urban components, in order to plan public administration actions aimed at improving the quality of life of city dwellers, made today's planners use certain integrated sciences for this activity, such as Geography, which is practically extremely important, as its main object of study is space with the use of geotechnologies.
