Abstract

This paper presentes the general traits of the neoAristotelian conception of practical rationality that Alasdair MacIntyre seeks to defend throughout his work. This is easily traceable in his main mature works and takes center stage in his last book, Ethics in the Conflicts of Modernity. Starting from this characterization, there follows an analysis of the epistemological and methodological consequences of adopting such a conception for empirical social sciences. These cannot remain indifferent to the discussions in the field of practical philosophy and, in fact, usually carry anthropological and philosophical commitments implicitly, though without recognizing them. Through some examples taken from political science, it is shown that a good part of the dominant methodological approaches in these disciplines still prove to be insensitive the critique put forward by MacIntyre and others.
