Abstract

ntroduction: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neuromuscular affection of Central and Peripheral Nervous System with motor neuron compromisement, in which sleep disturbance can occur. Sleep disturbances can be secondary or not to respiratory impairment of ALS. Concurrent psychological involvement can, by it self, trigger sleep disorders. Goals: To analyze and to identify which of three scales of sleep quality (Stanford Sleepiness Scale - SSS, Epworth Sleepiness Scale - ESS, Mini-Sleep Questionnaire - MSQ) is the most appropriate to patients with ALS and to analyze the correlation between sleep quality and two scales of psychological evaluation (BDI e STAI I-II). Methods: Sixteen patients with ALS (12 men and 4 women) between 35 and 77 years them were submitted to the tests of the proposed protocol. Results: There were significant correlations (p < 0,05) between scales: SSS and ESS; SSS and MSQ; BDI and SSS; and BDI and MSQ. Conclusions: The SSS was the scale with the highest correlation with the other two tools; depression but not anxiety seems to be related to sleep disorders in ALS patients.
