Abstract

The arterial hypertension is one of the main risk factors for the cerebrovascular diseases, more common in the elderly, which could lead to several alterations in the anatomical and physiologic structures of the brain, committing several abilities and cognitive functions, as well as dementia. Objective. To accomplish a bibliographical revision about the relationship between arterial hypertension and cognition in elderly atients. Method. A reference searching of eleven national and international researches, from 1996 to 2006, related to arterial hypertension and cognition in elderly. Result. Among the papers, eight articles verified that arterial hypertension affected cognitive function, and two articles did not find any relationship between arterial hypertension and cognition, and one article was not conclusive. Conclusion. In most of the papers was verified that there is a association between arterial hypertension and cognition in elderly patients.
