Abstract

Introduction. The objective of this study was to analyze social-demographic features and funcionality of patients with diagnosis of stroke that has been seen at the neurological physical therapy clinic at Passo Fundo University. Method. Sixteen patients with diagnosis of stroke, who agreed on participating of the research, in the period from March to August 2006. The variables used were gender, ethnicity, age, kind of stroke, marital status, and time of lesion. The Index of Barthel was used to evaluate the functionality of each patient. Results. 81% of the stroke patients were independents, 13% of them needed supervision or assistance to develop their daily activities, and 6% of them were dependent. Conclusion. The present study
has shown that the great majority of the patients, after stroke, were independent or needed supervision to daily activities. This fact suggested that rehabilitation must be stimulated in order to obtain a greater functionality as well as a better life quality of these patients.
