Abstract

Objective. To demonstrate the importance of aquatic rehabilitation as therapeutic resource for treatment of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Method. We have been assessed two patients with diagnosis of ALS. The program of hydro kinesiotherapy lasted 16 weeks with sessions of 45 minutes, twice a week in heated water on 33°C. They were evaluated at the beginning and end of the study by: quality of life; functionality; fatigue and pain. Results. functionality did not change before and after treatment; patient 1 presented decrease on pain from 3 to 1 and the patient 2 decreases from 5 to 1; patient 1 kept the lowest score of fatigue, 9 and the patient 2 decreased the score from 44 to 32; patients had amendment only in domain communication “Rarely presents difficulty” for “no shows” and maintained the quality of life in other domains. Conclusion. Considering that it is an incurable degenerative disease with characteristics of rapid progression, we conclude that the hydro kinesiotherapy obtained good results in quality of life, functionality, fatigue and pain, and can be a good therapeutic approach for the treatment of patients with ALS.
