Abstract

Introduction. In spinal cord injury (SCI) there is an interruption of spinal components, leading to absence of movement or sensitivity at levels below the injury. The respiratory muscles of individuals with SCI are weak, the inspiratory capacity and the vital capacity are reduced, causing a restrictive disorder, incompetence to generate an effective contraction, affecting the inspiratory volume, the maximum expiratory pressure, and the ineffective cough. Objective. To identify the effects of physical therapy on the respiratory system of individuals with SCI. Method. This is a literature review, developed with articles published from 2017 to 2022 in the following electronic databases: PubMed, PEDro and VHL, using the descriptors spinal cord trauma, respiratory system, physiotherapy, and their respective synonyms in the language English. Results. 41 articles were found, but 6 articles were selected that were included, where the greatest interest was to analyze the effects of physiotherapeutic interventions on the respiratory system of individuals with SCI, obtaining satisfactory results. Conclusion. The effects of physiotherapeutic interventions present in this study bring benefits to individuals with high SCI, providing a better quality of life and avoiding possible complications that may arise.
