Introduction. The diaphragm muscle can have its function compromised by some diseases. As an evaluation tool for this muscle, ultrasound (USG) has been used as a great ally for assessing diaphragmatic thickness (DT). Objective: To review the literature on the methodological aspects of evaluation using USG to measure DT in spontaneous breathing in unhealthy adults and to gather the thickening values found. Method. A descriptive integrative literature review. The search was carried out in the PubMed, SciELO, PEDro, CAPES and BVS databases, selecting descriptive, analytical, and interventional studies, in the last 10 years, with people over the age of 18. Results. Of the 157 studies, 151 were excluded, resulting in 6 eligible studies. DT was assessed in adults with the following pathologies: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Stroke, Cancer (CA) of the lung, Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1st (CMT1A), Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) and Inclusion Body Myositis (ICM). The mean DT ranged from 0.18 (DT-Inspiratory) to 0.48 (DT-Inspiratory). The lowest DT was found in ICM and the highest was found in stroke. Conclusion. Different methodologies have been used to assess DT. The review provided important data on methodological aspects, since they can facilitate clinical diagnosis and assist in pulmonary rehabilitation.
