Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to examine Robert Adam’s some influences in conceiving the so-called Lion Gate at Syon House on the out skirts of London, among which that one of G. B. Piranesi. This same design was used to create the Northumberland portico, installed at the beginning of the 19th Century at the entrance of the Imperial Palace of São Cristovão (RJ). Considering the connections between Rome and the United Kingdom, it is possible to observe the diffusion of the English-based neoclassical architecture in Brazil after the arrival of the Portuguese Royal family. The value of an architectural language proposed by Robert Adam as a field of experimentation triggered by the ancient world is evident.
