Abstract

In line with the proposed discussion of “Medievalisms and the Arts in the 19th Century”, this article investigates the construction of the memory of Isabella I of Castile (1474–1504) in the 19th century, analyzing its reformulation in historiographical discourse and monumental iconography. Drawing on Halbwachs’s (1996) conception of collective memory, it examines how the queen’s figure was dissociated from Ferdinand II and appropriated by Spanish nationalism, consolidating itself as a symbol of monarchical unity.
