The Christie Affair and the Depictions of the English Diplomat in Semana Illustrada

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the images of the British representative in Brazil, William Christie, published by the Semana Illustrada magazine, in the context of the Christie Affair, as well as the brief repercussion the issue had in England. The diplomat was depicted by the magazine as greedy and maladjusted, and his image was used by Fleuss and his team to represent the “other,” reinforcing national sovereignty.
