Abstract

This research in progress develops a reading about the public image of Julio Argentino Roca, corresponding to his second term as president of the Argentine Republic between 1898 and 1904. The first results address the notion of double-faced, as a quality of the image that shows leaks in the forms of representation of J. A. Roca, either in those images that correspond to the official ideology through portraits commissioned by the State, such as those found in the press of the time, being the satirical and critical antithesis that is presented in the editions of the magazine Caras y Caretas. The approach of this work is based on the study of images, framed in an approach of the social history of art and culture. visual that allows to show tensions and encounters in the construction of the image of J. A. Roca, taking as its axis the canonical disciplines of art (painting, sculpture, engraving and photography) in contrast to the graphic culture of the magazine Caras y Caretas that wins the street as a new mass communication device.x
