Abstract

The study of the images that circulated in Europe and North America in the nineteenth century constitute a privileged access to the way in which the modern West built an image of America according to the ups and downs of its colonialist pretensions. These images, invested with an epistemological value that required compliance with the changing criteria of scientific veracity, also possessed an aesthetic value and curiosity that collaborated in their acceptance and popularization. Together with the objects collected by the expeditions, these images were part of the American objects that were collected and classified to consolidate a historical narrative in which the past of Central America would always be subsumed to that of the colonial powers.
