Dossier “More Women in Images”

Call for Papers – Volume 08 (2026)
Organized by Carolin Overhoff Ferreira and Karina Almeida

In recent years, we have witnessed a growing strengthening of reflections on images produced by women and on the ways in which female bodies, subjectivities, and gazes have been represented—or erased—in the fields of cinema, visual arts, and photography. This dossier aims to gather articles that contribute to the critical debate on the presence—and absence—of women in and behind images, from an intersectional, historical, and political perspective.

The goal is to foster a plural discussion, welcoming research focused on the analysis of works and trajectories of artists, filmmakers, and photographers, as well as reflections on curatorial practices, archiving, and representation policies. We are especially interested in making visible productions from the Global South, counter-hegemonic practices, and feminist and decolonial epistemologies that challenge the male and Eurocentric dominance in the fields of visual arts and audiovisual media.

The dossier “More Women in Images” seeks to compile articles addressing the following thematic areas (among others):

- Representations of the feminine in cinema, photography, and visual arts;

- Trajectories of artists and creators marginalized or rendered invisible by the history of art and cinema;

- Feminist, decolonial, and intersectional epistemologies applied to image analysis;

- Curatorship, archives, and memory practices focused on women and gender dissidents;

- Audiovisual and artistic practices as tools for emancipation and social critique;

- Creative processes of women in contemporary audiovisual and visual arts;

- Gender and authorship: challenges in criticism, history, and image production.

Submission deadline: September 1, 2026

Unpublished articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or English will be accepted. Texts must follow the journal’s editorial guidelines and be submitted through the official journal platform (https://periodicos.unifesp.br/index.php/img/about/submissions). The call is open to researchers of all areas, with particular interest in contributions that value interdisciplinary perspectives and a commitment to gender justice.
