The importance of Environmental Education in the teaching-learning process: promoting ecological awareness

Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the relevance of Environmental Education in middle school classes for the development of ecological awareness among students at Juscelino Kubitschek State School, located in the City of Assú (RN, Brazil). The purpose is to shape citizens who are engaged in environmental preservation and sustainability. The methodology is based on studies that reflect and discuss the topic, aligned with the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). The results revealed that when asked about the importance of the environment and environmental degradation in Assú/RN, students were able to recognize them. However, there was a gap in their perception of effective actions and problem-solving in which students can directly contribute. They highlighted the lack of concrete initiatives but emphasized that each individual is responsible for promoting change. Thus, this study underscores the need for more practical and targeted educational strategies that allow students not only to understand but also actively participate in promoting environmental preservation in their community.
