Abstract

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) occur in 10 to 15% in population. Recently PFO have been found in 45% of patients with cryptogenic stroke and in 23% of patients with atherosclerosis of large vessels. The exact mechanism of association of PFO and stroke is not established. The treatment of stroke and PFO may be clinical, or surgical. Recently percutaneous closure of PFO has been proposed.
