Prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain: an integrative review

Abstract

Introduction. Chronic pain is a worldwide problem that causes a lot of damage both to public health and to the quality of life of its sufferers. With this second topic in mind, some studies have investigated the prevalence of psychiatric problems in this population, including anxiety and depression. Objetictive. To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with chronic pain. Method. An integrative review of original clinical articles available in full in English from the last 5 years was carried out from the databases of MedLine/Pubmed and the Web of Science. Of the 4,316 studies initially found in the selected databases, 11 were included in the final sample of this review after applying all the criteria. Results. The mean anxiety among patients with some type of chronic pain was 40.17%, ranging from 19.44% to 66.00% and a median between 42.60%, while depression was 35.31%, varying between 63.00% and 19.65% and a median of 25.40%. Conclusion. Therefore, it is concluded that there is a high prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain, even more frequently than when compared to the rates of the general population.
