Introduction. Burnout syndrome was originally defined as a response to continuous stress related to work conditions. Even though psychiatrists share similarities with other specialists, they have unique characteristics that may confer increased risk for professional exhaustion. Objective. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of burnout syndrome among psychiatrists through a systematic literature review and to describe the scientific production about this subject. Method. We conducted an integrative review, triggered by the following question: What is the prevalence of burnout syndrome among psychiatrists around the world? The research was carried out using the following databases: MEDLINE via Pubmed; SciVerse Scopus e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). We included cross-sectional studies that used validated questionnaires, published in the last 10 years in Portuguese, Spanish and English. Results. The studies showed a discrepancy in the prevalence of burnout. Psychiatrists who work exclusively with clinical (or patient) care and male psychiatrists were the most affected by the syndrome. The prevalence of Burnout varies between 5 and 86.6% among the studies included in this review. Conclusions. These findings do not allow for definitive conclusions about the prevalence of burnout among psychiatrists. Our review highlights the need for a more specific and standardized instrument to screen and/or diagnose burnout. It also becomes evident that we need to have in place measures to prevent the Burnout syndrome. This review points to the importance of implementing a more careful management of working hours, improving supervising skills and searching for professional satisfaction.
