Abstract

Objective. To demonstrate the importance of exercise and physical therapeutic intervention in patients with diabetes as a preventive measure against future repercussions and a promoter of a better quality of life. Method. Systematic review based on randomized clinical trials of the last 10 years found in the databases: PUBMED, SCIELO and LILACS, through keywords described in the DeCs: Diabetes Mellitus type 2, Physical exercise, Physiotherapy, Diabetic Neuropathies and prevention. The adopted strategy was repeated in all databases, in the three languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish. Subsequently, the studies were evaluated and classified using the Jadad scale. Results. A total of 5,218 studies were identified, which initially met the inclusion criteria and search filters used. Of these, only 66 studies actually related to the scope of the present review and were classified in a second analysis. Subsequently, the works underwent a classificatory evaluation, where only 15 studies were included and analyzed in full. All included studies addressed the management of the disease with different modalities, frequency and intensity of exercise. Conclusion. The exercise can bring positive results on the musculoskeletal and biomechanical structures of patients with diabetic neuropathy, evidenced by the functional results identified, however, further studies are needed, with larger populations and durations in order to to highlight the benefit of exercise on the quality of life of these individuals and through the progression of this disease.
