Abstract

Introduction. The fruits and leaves extracted from olive trees, such as extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and its most abundant polyphenol, Oleuropein (OLE), have several therapeutic benefits, including neuroprotective activity. The elderly population faces the threat of health problems related to neurodegeneration. Biomarkers of Alzheimer's brain alterations, in addition to symptoms such as cognitive decline in some functions, loss of memory, or processing speed are symptoms that may indicate the development of neurodegenerative diseases, demanding that effective treatment routes be sought. Objective. This review aims to evaluate the effects of olive oil supplementation and other sources of oleuropein in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. Method. The clinical studies examining the relationship between EVOO, Oleuropein, and neurodegenerative diseases published until January 2023, were identified in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and were systematically searched. Evidence analysis was performed using robust tools to assess the risk of bias (RoB 2.0) and methodological quality (GRADE) of included studies. Results. A total of four studies were included. Neurological conditions include Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment. Conclusion. Overall, neuroprotective therapeutic benefits were seen through EVOO and OLE supplementation. Currently published studies, however, are limited, requiring continuity and improvement of the intervention methodology employed.
