Abstract

Introduction. Drop foot syndrome is known as a disorder that makes it difficult or generates an inability to move the ankle joint and fingers. Once this difficulty in performing dorsiflexion in the muscles of the affected foot, it is characterized by being a sign of neuromuscular damage with permanent or transient clinical manifestation. Objective. To describe and revise the etiological aspects of drop foot syndrome. Method. Narrative Review, based on the PubMed/Medline, Lilacs and Scielo databases. Results. A theoretical framework was made about the main illnesses that trigger drop foot syndrome, according to the injured motor neuron, pointing to the drop foot syndrome pathophysiology involved in each described etiology. Conclusion. It is emphasized the importance of clinical understanding of pathologies that can trigger drop foot syndrome and functional changes arising from this process, since the basis of prevalence rates and incidences also emphasize the importance including assistance in patients who develop drop foot. Discussions on the subject need more robust research in search of evidence to support and highlight functional changes by evolution of this pathology.
