Abstract

The present study presents as a problem issue the relationship between the Mumbuca quilombola community, located in Jalapão, TO, and processes associated with the economic and tourist development of the state and the region. The objective of the research was to understand the community agency in the context presented, specifically after the creation of the State Park of Jalapão (PEJ) in 2001. The research was carried out in 2018, through participant observation and revisiting the available theoretical production. Categories such as development, ethno-development, expansion of freedoms and culture as a resource, as well as authors who have developed works on the on-screen community support the problematization of the object and help to understand what traditional ways of inhabiting and thinking the territory need to be seen not as a hindrance development, but as possibilities to promote the expansion of substantive freedoms (SEM, 2010) and ethnodevelopment (LITTLE, 2002)
