Influence of variations in Pantanal bird names on Birdwatching Tourism

Abstract

The Brazilian Pantanal, internationally recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, is home to a rich avifauna that attracts birdwatchers from around the world. This study investigates how knowledge of local variations in Pantanal bird names influences birdwatching tourism in the region. Through a detailed analysis of vernacular nomenclatures used in six sub-regions of the Pantanal (Abobral, Aquidauana, Nhecolândia, Paiaguás, Paraguai, and Porto Murtinho), the study reveals the linguistic and cultural complexity associated with bird identification. The research combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews with local guides, tourists, and analysis of tourist flow data. The results indicate that mastering local bird names not only enriches the observers' experience but also promotes greater interaction with local communities, contributing to more sustainable and culturally sensitive tourism. Furthermore, the study highlights how this knowledge can be used to improve tourism marketing strategies, the development of educational materials, and the training of specialized guides. It is concluded that understanding and valuing local linguistic variations in Pantanal bird nomenclature have a significant impact on the quality and sustainability of birdwatching tourism in the region.
