Abstract

Birdwatching tourism is a growing segment, attracting people interested in diverse bird species, including rare, endemic and threatened ones. This niche attracts a variety of customers in terms of age, gender and income, and has a global reach, influencing travel decisions in different countries and continents. In Brazil, aviturists are younger compared to foreigners, both with higher educational and socioeconomic levels. Guides play an important role, connecting observers with nature and birds, they are expected to have species identification skills and share information. Although there are differences in clients' preferences and expectations regarding guides, both agree that a qualified guide significantly improves the experience. The motivation for birdwatching tourism varies, from interest in birds to contributing to conservation. Both Brazilian birdwatchers and foreign birdwatchers value species diversity, guide services and biodiversity conservation. Understanding these nuances is crucial to developing effective tourist itineraries and meeting customer needs, as well as involving local communities by ensuring sustainability and sharing of economic benefits.
