Syncope is the loss of consciousness or fainting, that is episodic, transient with spontaneous and complete recovery, not requiring specific ressuscitative measures. It's the most common type of loss of consciousness. Etiology is varied. Diagnosis is made by the clinical manifestations and specific investigation, that are discussed. Treatment depends on etiology. Disopiramine, beta blockers and teofiline are used in vasodepressor syncope, while fiuorocortisone acetate is used in orthostatic hypoten- sion with automomic insuficiency.
