The economic value of whale watching: a study in Praia do Forte (BA, Brazil)

Abstract

Maritime tourism, especially whale watching, has stood out amongst Ecotourism activities, offering not only environmental awareness but also significant economic impact. It is estimated that around 14 million people take part in this activity annually, with global sales generating billions of dollars. In Brazil, Praia do Forte has turned into a relevant destination for whale watching. This study estimated the regional economic impact of whale watching (WW) in Praia do Forte, state of Bahia, Brazil. The research was conducted in Praia do Forte, which is located in Mata do São João municipality, during 2023 WW season from July through October. A total of 128 questionnaires were applied, excluding 11 due to incomplete data. The analysis was based on the Money Generating Model (MGM2), adapted to Brazilian reality, utilizing input product matrix (MIP). Whale watching tourism attracted around 3.000 visitors in 2023 with average daily expenditure of R$ 841,73 per pax. Direct economic impact was estimated to be around R$ 4.4 million, growing up to R$ 9.3 million when considering multiplier effect in local economy. The activity generated between 85 and 122 direct jobs and contributed with R$ 416 thousand thru R$ 816 thousand in direct taxes. Whale watching tourism in Praia do Forte demonstrates a strong economic and social potential, promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation. Tourist’s willingness to pay towards whale conservation reflects an extra positive aspect, indicating opportunities to strengthen whale and marine environment preservation messages. The study presents insights for marketing and sustainability strategies, fostering regional tourism sector.
