The tourism phenomenon in Coastal Tourist Destinations: the context of Blue Tourism from the literature

Abstract

Considering the positive and negative impacts of and on the tourism phenomenon in Coastal Tourist Destinations, this research aims to analyze the context of Blue Tourism through literature in light of the international movement of discussion, awareness, and consciousness about the importance of coastal and oceanic zones during the Decade of Ocean Science. An initiative implemented by the United Nations (UN) in 2021. The research is exploratory and descriptive in nature, with a qualitative approach. It follows a bibliographic design using bibliometric strategies. Thus, 32 articles were identified in the Scopus database and 25 in the Web of Science. The final analysis is interpreted under the following topics: (i) pollution and contamination by pollutants, such as microplastics, highlighting the complexity of the problem and the need for evaluation and remediation strategies; (ii) climate change that threatens climatic patterns, biodiversity, human health, and the global economy, including blue tourism. Mitigation and adaptation strategies, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in technologies, and active participation of local communities, are essential; and (iii) challenges related to the tourism phenomenon in coastal and marine regions, where an integrated and collaborative approach, with interdisciplinary research and effective policies, can protect coastal tourist destinations, marine ecosystems, and dependent communities.
