Abstract

We present a bibliometric and network analysis of the Brazilian field of tourism, taken as the articles published in 16 Brazilian tourism journals. Utilizing keywords, we describe and evaluate its trajectory (1990-2018), with focus on the ecotourism cluster. We study the authorship (authors and institutions) and its geographic distribution (Brazilian states and regions and countries), dispersal of publication (distribution among journals), impact (citations) and intellectual structure (bibliographic references). The cluster is clearly delimited, but, given the low capillarity among its keywords, it ends up being "confused" with the set of articles that have "ecotourism" among their keywords. Authorship is particularly fragmented; there is a clear overrepresentation of articles published in the Northeast Region of Brazil, compared to the field as a whole. The Universidade de São Paulo has the highest production, but regarding overrepresentation the most expressive numbers come from Universidade Federal do Pará e Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. The Revista Brasileira de Ecoturismo published 110 of the cluster’s 208 articles (52,88%). Regarding the intellectual structure, there are few cocitations (authors, works and journals), as well as the importance of governments and supranational organizations in the authorship. The cluster still does not have a clear and well-defined conceptual and theoretical base.
